An uncoded alternation where the canonical/non canonical (i.e. prepositional) encoding of the P argument of a transitive verb reflects the holistic/partitive interpretation of the location argument (Levin 1993: 50). When the location argument is expressed as a canonical object (i.e., as a noun phrase), it is associated with a 'holistic/affected' interpretation; when the location argument is realized as a prepositional phrase, it is associated with a 'partitive' interpretation (Levin 1993: 50-51, Iwata 2008 and references therein).
