molotʹ (молоть)

show comment

Molot' also has the meaning ‘to mill’. This verb can take an instrument, but if it does, the instrument is coded with a locative (na kofemolke ‘in a coffee machine’) rather than the usual Instrumental case, and should be correspondently conceived of as a location rather than an instrument (or a composite instrument-location role). The reason is that molot' normally presupposes the use of a mechanical device, unlike English to grind.
