yào (要)

show comment

yào is used as a monotransitive verb, but it can enter a double object construction because its semantic features accord with the ditransitive constructional meaning. When used as a transitive verb, a preverbal PP is usually used and the most frequently-used prepositions are wèn and xiàng, which introduce the source of the transfer of its patient. When used in BA and BEI constructions, a complement is often necessary for syntactic and phonological reasons.
