giocare

Alongside the basic intransitive pattern (with the type of play optionally expressed as a prepositional phrase headed by a 'at', as in ex. 614), the verb giocare 'play' also has a transitive use, confined to a restricted set of objects, namely a sport competition (e.g., a football match giocare una partita, un incontro, and football pools giocare la schedina).
