A transitive action or activity verb whose normal direct object is a material or means appears instead with a direct object designating a "product" or outcome. Examples: pour water ~ pour a beer; tie a rope ~ tie a knot. I use this also for mental verbs and speech verbs where the "object" is an appropriate abstract noun, e.g. to know a subject, to ask a question.
